“The properties of the rational soul: it sees itself, analyzes itself, and makes itself such as it chooses; the fruit which it bears itself enjoys… it obtains its own end, wherever the limit of life may be fixed.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 11.1 (George Long)
Micro-Lesson#
The Stoic compass had four cardinal directions:
- Wisdom — knowing what is good, bad, and indifferent.
- Courage — doing what is right in the presence of what is hard.
- Justice — giving each their due, including yourself.
- Temperance — the measure that keeps the other three in proportion.
These are not abstractions. Every decision you make is an exercise in one of them. The disciplined life is not a different life from the virtuous life — they are the same life, seen from two angles.
Exercise (15 min)#
For each of the four virtues, write one sentence: “This week, I will practice [virtue] specifically by ____.” Make each act concrete and small enough to actually do.
Journal Prompt#
Of the four virtues, which is my weakest — and what is the smallest possible act that would strengthen it tomorrow?
