The Inner Citadel > *"Virtue is the only good; at any rate there is no good without virtue; and virtue itself is situated in our nobler part, that is, the rational part."* > — Seneca, *Letters to Lucilius* 71 (Richard Mott Gummere) ## Micro-Lesson The Stoics called wealth, status, health, and pleasure "preferred indifferents" — *preferable*, but not *necessary* for a good life. You may pursue them; you may not worship them. The man who treats money as preferable and virtue as necessary is free. The man who treats money as necessary and virtue as optional is a slave — even if he is rich. Today you audit your hierarchy. ## Exercise (15 min) List the five things you spent the most time and energy on this week. Beside each, write one of two labels: **Preferred Indifferent** or **Necessary (Virtue/Character)**. Notice the ratio. Reorder one item from tomorrow. ## Journal Prompt Which "preferred indifferent" have I been treating as necessary — and what would it cost me to demote it?
