“The present is the only thing of which a man can be deprived, if it is true that this is the only thing which he has.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 2.14 (George Long)
Micro-Lesson#
You cannot live in the past — it is gone. You cannot live in the future — it has not arrived. You can only ever act in the present, yet most of your mental life is spent replaying the one or rehearsing the other. The Stoic returns, relentlessly, to now. Not as a spiritual posture — as a tactical one. Power exists only in the present.
Exercise (15 min)#
Pick one anchor task for today — one thing that is truly yours to do. Set a 25-minute timer. For those 25 minutes, do only that. When the mind wanders to past or future, say “not now” and return. Repeat up to three rounds.
Journal Prompt#
Where was my mind during my most important task today — and what would it have looked like to be fully there?
