The Inner Citadel > *"Don't tell yourself anything more than what the initial impressions report. It's been reported to you that someone is speaking badly about you. This is the report — the report wasn't that you've been harmed. I see that my son is sick — but not that his life is at risk."* > — Marcus Aurelius, *Meditations* 8.49 (George Long, paraphrased) ## Micro-Lesson A first impression is raw data: a tone of voice, a glance, a number on a screen. Almost everything you suffer arrives in the **second sentence** — the interpretation you staple to the data. The Stoic discipline is to catch yourself mid-stapling. *"She didn't reply."* Stop. That is the report. Not: *"She doesn't care."* The first is data; the second is a wound you gave yourself. ## Exercise (12 min) List three "second sentences" you have added to raw events today. Cross out the second sentence each time. Keep only the first. ## Journal Prompt What is the recurring "second sentence" I keep stapling onto my life, and what would change if I stopped?
