The Inner Citadel > *"The greatest remedy for anger is delay."* > — Seneca, *De Ira* (On Anger) III.12 (Aubrey Stewart translation) ## Micro-Lesson The Stoics did not teach you to suppress anger; they taught you to **delay** it past the point where it can do damage. The first flash of anger is involuntary — a body response. What follows is the story you tell yourself about the flash. Between the flash and the story lies the gap. Your freedom lives in that gap. Seneca's prescription: don't act in the first wave. Wait. The wave always breaks. ## Exercise (10 min) Define your **Cool-Down Protocol** today — a 90-second ritual you will run whenever anger, anxiety, or irritation spikes: 1. Three slow exhales. 2. Name the emotion silently once. 3. Ask: *"Is my response up to me?"* (Yes.) 4. Decide the response after the wave has passed — never inside it. Write the protocol on a card. Carry it. ## Journal Prompt What is the last thing I said or did inside the wave that I would not have done outside it?
