“Begin the morning by saying to thyself, I shall meet with the busybody, the ungrateful, arrogant, deceitful, envious, unsocial… For we are made for co-operation, like feet, like hands, like eyelids.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 2.1 (George Long)

Micro-Lesson#

The Stoic day begins before the day begins. Marcus rehearsed the difficult people he would meet — not to dread them, but to meet them already prepared. You will do the same: a 60-second anticipation of the day’s frictions, paired with the intention to meet them as a co-operator, not a victim. This is the Morning Shield. It is non-negotiable from today forward.

Exercise (10 min)#

Tomorrow, before you open any app, write in the journal:

  1. Three frictions I expect today (people, meetings, delays).
  2. The role I intend to play in each (calm, just, present).
  3. One thing that is truly mine to do today — the day’s anchor task.

Journal Prompt#

If I could choose one quality to carry into every meeting tomorrow, what would it be — and what would I have to drop to carry it?
