The Inner Citadel > *"Take away thy opinion, and then there is taken away the complaint, 'I have been harmed.' Take away the complaint, 'I have been harmed,' and the harm is taken away."* > — Marcus Aurelius, *Meditations* 4.7 (George Long) ## Micro-Lesson The Stoic thesis is radical but verifiable in your own experience: an event cannot harm you; only your judgment about it can. A rude email is ink on a screen. The harm is the story you tell yourself afterward — *"this is unfair," "they don't respect me," "I can't believe…"* Marcus is not asking you to deny pain; he is asking you to stop adding a second wound to the first. ## Exercise (15 min) Pick one annoyance from today — a slight, a delay, a disappointment. Write the raw facts in one sentence (e.g., *"Email arrived at 9:14 saying the project is delayed."*). Then write the story you added (e.g., *"My boss thinks I'm failing."*). Cross out the story. Keep only the facts. ## Journal Prompt What is one "harm" I am currently carrying that is mostly made of opinion, not fact?
